Beautiful Pearl Art and Literature Supporting the Drawing - Isaiah Heidt 9-2 Illustrator

Beautiful Pearl Art and Literature Supporting the Drawing

I chose to draw this picture of a pearl because the whole book so far has basically been focused on the magical pearl and the good and evil that it brings.

The pearl has brought many good and evil things to Kino and his family here is a list of the good and evil that it has brought.
Good
-Coyotito was able to be helped by the Doctor seeing as they now have payment.
-Kino has money to send his child to school and afford to have a better life for his son  and the rest of his family.

Bad
-The pearl has tempted people like the Doctor to think about stealing it.
-Evil spirits and songs have been constantly in the head of Kino since finding the pearl.
-Kino is now forced to travel the dangerous route to the Capital to try and get a fair trade  for his pearl and not be cheated by the tradesmen.

These are all reasons why the pearl is so important to the story and why i decided to choose this image of a pearl as my symbol to represent the story so far.

Questions Never Asked- Sabrina El-Abry

1. If Kino hadn't found the pearl by the end of chapter 2, what other options would he have to save Coyotito(his son)?
If Kino really wanted to save his son, he might've sold the canoe to pay the doctor. After that, they might not have any money for food because of how poor they'd become.

2. How do you think the pearl will affect them from this point?
Since they've been poor for a long time, they might not know how to react to the drastic change. My guess is they'll be learning a lot from their mistakes in the next few chapters.

3. What kinds of obstacles did Kino and his family have to face in poverty? What obstacles would they face if they were wealthy?
Kino and his family might've been worried about what they were going to have for dinner in the evening. Now they might have to control what they spend on.

4. Do you think the story would appeal to a wider range of people if the author had mentioned how Kino and Juana had originally met?
Yes I definitely think that the story would appeal to a wider range of people because there is a large amount of people that like romance. It might not be a lot more people but it's still more people.

5. How would Coyotito react to his scorpion sting if he was older?
Coyotito would probably run away from it instead of play with it. He would've had a much higher chance of not getting stung.

1. "But Juana's eyes were on him and she could not wait"

  • This part of the story creates suspense in how Juana’s feeling because her and Kino want to see the pearl so they can get help from the doctor because of Coyotito . The atmosphere in this part is anxious and nerve wrecking for the characters and the readers.

     2.  "This doctor was of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved                                                                                                                                          and robbed and despised Kino's race"

  • This passage uses decent language to express how the doctor's being racist towards Kino's race. It shows that Kino’s race has been treated poorly and unequal in their place.  Because of the situation it makes the character feel angry and mad.

3."They knew his ignorance, his cruelty, his his avarice, his appetites, his sins."

  • The section shows what Kino's impression of the doctor from past experiences. He doesn't seem to like him very much according to the passage. The author uses description of the doctor to show how he isn't a good guy in their town.

    4.  "Then without warning, he struck the gate a crushing blow with his fist."

  • The author uses description of action to show that the character is angry because of what happened earlier. It is a surprising event because Kino doesn't seem to come out as a violent character in the book. The writer wants to put some tension between the characters.

    5.  "And bow a wave of shame went over the whole procession. They melted away"

  • The author uses metaphor to describe the atmosphere of the passage which is upset or sad because of how the doctors treated them. The writer wants the readers to feel bad for the characters because of what happened to him. The author wants to have different moods in each passage in order to keep the book interesting.

Isaiah Heidt 9-2 Quote Blog

1.) "Under her breath Juana repeated an ancient magic to guard against such evil, and on top muttered a Hail Mary between clenched teeth"    Pg. 5

In this quote Juana is reciting magic and prayers to try and help save and protect her baby which was just stung by a scorpion. This quote shows how she believes in religion and is very spirited. It also shows how much she loves and cares for her baby.

2.) "Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians?"   Pg.11

Said by the town doctor who is refusing to heal a baby because the parents have no money. This quote shows how the doctor is not a nice person and is greedy. It also shows how poor the main characters are and how rich some of the people they live near are.

3.) "Kino lifted the flesh, and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon"   Pg.19

This quote shows how Kino makes a living and lets us know that the pearl he found was very special and rare. It also has smilies to help visualize what the author is trying to let us know and is very descriptive in the way he finds and removes the pearl from the shell.

4.) "This doctor was of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kinos race"   Pg.9

The author tells us with this quote that Kinos family and relatives had been poorly treated by richer peoples. This also lets us know how the relationship between some of the rich in the town and some of the poor in the town is.

5.) "Until at last came to view eight small misshapen seed pearls, as ugly as ulcers, flattened and almost valueless"   Pg.11

I can tell from this quote that Kino and his family are very poor and do not have a lot of money. It also shows how rich the doctor is compared to the rest of the town in how he won't even take Kinos life savings as payment to heal an insect bite because its not enough money.
