Isaiah Heidt 9-2 Quote Blog

1.) "Under her breath Juana repeated an ancient magic to guard against such evil, and on top muttered a Hail Mary between clenched teeth"    Pg. 5

In this quote Juana is reciting magic and prayers to try and help save and protect her baby which was just stung by a scorpion. This quote shows how she believes in religion and is very spirited. It also shows how much she loves and cares for her baby.

2.) "Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians?"   Pg.11

Said by the town doctor who is refusing to heal a baby because the parents have no money. This quote shows how the doctor is not a nice person and is greedy. It also shows how poor the main characters are and how rich some of the people they live near are.

3.) "Kino lifted the flesh, and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon"   Pg.19

This quote shows how Kino makes a living and lets us know that the pearl he found was very special and rare. It also has smilies to help visualize what the author is trying to let us know and is very descriptive in the way he finds and removes the pearl from the shell.

4.) "This doctor was of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kinos race"   Pg.9

The author tells us with this quote that Kinos family and relatives had been poorly treated by richer peoples. This also lets us know how the relationship between some of the rich in the town and some of the poor in the town is.

5.) "Until at last came to view eight small misshapen seed pearls, as ugly as ulcers, flattened and almost valueless"   Pg.11

I can tell from this quote that Kino and his family are very poor and do not have a lot of money. It also shows how rich the doctor is compared to the rest of the town in how he won't even take Kinos life savings as payment to heal an insect bite because its not enough money.

  1. Your quotes show a good understanding of the novel. Great that you've used quotes from various characters throughout section one.
