Matthew Underwood - Illustrator 3
The picture represented here is the pearl from the book because the book basically talks about the pearl during the whole book. This picture represents both good and bad. It is good because it could be sold at a high price and Kino and his family could become wealthy, but on the other side it is evil. It is evil because its worth a lot and the Doctor considering stealing it and ever since Kino got the pearl, he's had evil songs stuck in his head. These are my reasons why I selected this picture and why.

Matthew Underwood - Quoter 2
1. Pg.24, "In the pearl he saw Juana and Coyotito and himself standing and kneeling at the high altar, and they were being married now that they could pay". This means that Kino thinks that he can sell the pearl and become very wealthy and get married to his wife that he coudnt do before because he didn't have enough money.
2. Pg.26, "Juana caught her breath sharply" Juana caught her breath sharply because it might be possible for her son Coyotito to go to school.
3. Pg.28, "Kino opened his hand and held it out, and the preist gasped a little at its size and beuty of the pearl". This implies that the pearl is very big and could be sold at a high price and bring fortune to Kinos family.
4. Pg.30, "Kino stood in the door, filling it, and hatred raged and flamed in back of his eyes, and fear to, for the hundreds of years of subjation were cut deep in him". Kino is mad because the Doctor, despises his kind but he is helping his baby heal from the scorpion sting.
5. Pg.35, "He knew the pearl would be buried in the house, and he thought Kino might look toward the place it was buried." This means that the Doctor might actually be thinking about stealing the pearl for himself so he can go sell it and get wealthy.

Connect The Pearls
Often in The Pearl, Kino was filled with songs that played in his head representing his mood. I can personally relate to this because music is something that can change a persons mood just like that.
Many times after a bad day I can go home and just listen to music and forget about everything that made me upset. Each song can make you feel a different way.
For me that would be the most interesting part of music production, the ability to set the mood your listeners feelings. To share feelings through sound is amazing to me.
That's one of the ways you can tell a good song from a great song.
The mood a song creates is everything.

Characteristics Of A Character -Cielo Bautista
Pg 59, 60, 77, 83, 89
- In pages 59 and 60 is where Kino was attacked and it was also the event where he had killed someone from his town. He was thinking that people around him were always planning and trying to steal his pearl away from him so they would have his richness. He was becoming anxious and worrisome and very protective over the pearl. He was mostly in conflict with himself for thinking unnecessary thoughts and with people because he sees them as his enemies instead of his friends. He is having negative thoughts about the town and the place he lives in and the people he sees everyday. Kino was experiencing good fortune because of the pearl and what it could bring to this family but it’s also bringing hardship to his family because of his little arguments with Juana about the pearl. The author reveals a little change of personalities throughout the section but only with Kino.
- Pages 77 and 83 is when the caring side of Kino shows. It shows how much he cares for his family and that he would do anything for them to make their life better and for them to be sade. He feels that if they were all in danger it would be better if he was the one who would get hurt instead of them because he doesn't want to loose them in any circumstances and he doesn't want to take chances. He is kind of in conflict with Juana because Juana doesn't want him to be doing it alone because she wants to be there for him every step of the way and she wants to help him in any way possible. They are mostly experiencing hardship in this part because of the trackers and because of the setting of the story which they have to go through the day without any water for example. Even though Kino is changing he still cares about his family most and he would do anything for them.
- Everything changes in pg 89. Kino lost one of his family member. And thats when he realized that the pearl didn't bring anything good for him. It only brought bad luck towards his family. He was feeling very ashamed of himself because he let something control his mind and in this case it was the pearl. He was also upset and sad because he lost someone very special to him. They were experiencing hardship because of what happened to Coyotito. The author reveals his vulnerable side.

Beautiful Mood Maven
Beautiful Mood Maven
1.'' And like a shadow she glided towards the door.''
In this section of the pearl and mainly the whole book there is plenty of figurative language of all sorts from hyperbole, smiles, and metaphors to lots of personification. This example above is a simile. I chose a quote that contains figurative language since I find it really helps emphasize the mood and tone of the story, seeing as it usually is comparing something we cant see to something we know very well.
2. ''And he brought in a long working knife, eighteen inches long and heavy, as a small ax, a tool and a weapon.''
If the author had just said that Kino had a long knife we would not of had had the image in our head that the author really wanted us to have. By using language like this the author has also made us think about all the things the knife could be used for like being a tool, or a weapon.
3. ''Some ancient thing out of the past of his people was alive in him.''
This quote shows how Kino and his family have struggled through their whole lives it makes us use prior knowledge of ancient peoples and how many people were mistreated. We can relate things from our own lives to the story by the type of words the author chooses to use.
4. ''The coyotes cried and laughed in the brush, and the owls screeched and hissed over their heads.''
The author uses personification to show how scary the journey to the capital is. This sentence used by the author shows us the hardship and struggles that Kino and his family are going through and foreshadows that there is worse to come by creating a dramatic and dark setting and scenery.
5. ''And Kino thrust the pearl back into his clothing, and the music of the pearl has become sinister in his ears, and it was interwoven with music of evil.''
I can infer from this quote that the pearl is evil and can bring nothing good. It foreshadows for the bad and darkness that the pearl will later bring and tells us how Kino is now connected to the pearl as he thinks it is going to bring him success and fortune.

Quotes- Sabrina El-Abry 9-2
1. "Now, in an instant, Juana knew that the old life was gone forever." Pg.60
Juana has been trying to find the peace she had before they found the pearl. Now that Kino has killed another man, she lost all hope. She found that she had an immense amount of inner peace before they found the pearl.
2. ""This pearl has become my soul," said Kino." Pg.67
Kino has become so attached to the pearl that it's become a part of him. I personally believe that it's a bad thing to get attached to material items.
3. "...the music of the pearl had become sinister in his ears, and it was interwoven with the music of evil." Pg.71
Kino now realizes that the pearl is evil. Before he didn't believe how evil it was and thought that there was a future in the pearl. His wife Juana, had warned him several times about it but he repetitively refused to give it up.
4. "She picked up a little twig from the ground and tickled him.." Pg.72
Even though Juana is going through such a rough time, she still makes time for baby Coyotito and tries to play with him as much as possible. Usually adults get so lost in their own problems that they forget about the little ones.
5. "And the music of the pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared." Pg.90
At the end of the story Juana and Kino throw away the pearl because all it brought was misfortune into the family. They became more at peace with their lives' in the ending.

Visually A-Pearling - Brandon Jobson
Visually A-Pearling
This collage of images repressnt the events occurring in The Pearl.
I chose the top left picture because it is displaying the book I am reading for this Blog post.
Second image of the beach is significate to the story because it is where Kino and Juana live with their baby. It looks nice however, it's no where near how the rich citizens live. You can find them located in The in City of Stone and Plaster
The part in the story where the baby is stung by the deadly scorpion is shown by the third and the fourth image. This is a big part of The Pearl and this is th main reason Kino goes to look for the pearl.
The last two images represent Kino takes his canoe to find the pearl to help his child and how he is successful doing so.

Pearly Quotes -Cielo Bautista
1. "Now the neighbours knew that time would now date from Kino's pearl, and that they would discuss this moment for many years to come" -Pg 26
- The characters in the book all believed that the pearl would change Kino's life in many ways. But some doubted the pearl and thought that it could bring out the worse in Kino because of his wealth. It explains the different thought if people in their neighbourhood.
2. "Everyone knew why the doctor why the doctor had come. He was not good at dissembling and he was very well understood" -Pg 32
- Everyone in the neighbourhood knew what the doctor very well. They knew that the doctor helps only the rich people because he gets something in return. So when he heard about the pearl he treated Kino like one of his friends because he was rich. He changed personality for the wealth.
3. “Because they were happy and excited they thought everyone shared their joy” -Pg 23
- In this quote it describes how Kino and Juana saw things differently than what it reality was really like. They thought that everyone thought the same but when something good happens to another person which isn't them, they don’t realize that some people are jealous and upset that it didn’t happen to them.
4. “Kino felt all the warmth and security of his family behind him” -Pg 28
- This quote stood out to me because to me it defines KIno’s strength. According to Kino his family is his support system and that knowing that his family is behind them through everything makes him feel good. It builds and completes his character in the book because of how he cares for them.
5. “He could not take the chance of pitting his certain ignorance against this man’s possible knowledge” -Pg 30
- This quote shows how caring and thoughtful Kino is because he would set aside problems with the doctor in order for Coyotito to be better. Even though he doesn't trust the doctor he knows that the doctor will help them a lot and that he needs to trust him a little even though they had a rough past together.

Connections- Sabrina El-Abry 9-2
"Kino had found the great Pearl of the World."
This reminds me of a movie I watched a while back about a guy named Steve. Steve was a runner and he came in first place in a 5k race against about 200 other people. Most of the people running the race were his friends and they became very jealous of him as soon as they found out he got first. Just like in the story, Kino's neighbours envied him when they found out that he found the great pearl. In my experience, it's the worst feeling in the world to have your friends be jealous instead of happy for your achievements. During that time, you begin to stop trusting people and you start isolating yourself from the rest of the world. I think what people need to realize is that jealousy is not the answer. I also believe that all the jealous people in The Pearl are just building hatred towards one another.

Matthew Underwood - Character Commandant 1
1. Pg5, "Kinos breath whistled in his nostrils and he opened his mouth to stop it". This implies that Kino is breathing hard because his baby is in trouble and he is nervous.
2. Pg5, "Under her breath Juana repeated an ancient magic to gaurd against such evil". Juana is singing this song to ward off the evil (the scorpion) and she is trying to stay calm.
3. Pg6, "He threw it down and beat it into the earth floor with his fist". This tells us that Kino is very angry at what the scorpion has done to his baby (Coyotito) and is disapointed in him self.
4. Pg6, "But Juana had the baby in her arms now". Juana is holding the baby comforting him trying to stay calm and find someone to help.
5. Pg11, "I am a doctor, not a veterinary". The doctor was not of Kinos people and did not help Kinos baby, he came from a race where for nearly 400 years, they had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kinos race.

Beautiful Pearl Art and Literature Supporting the Drawing - Isaiah Heidt 9-2 Illustrator
Beautiful Pearl Art and Literature Supporting the Drawing
I chose to draw this picture of a pearl because the whole book so far has basically been focused on the magical pearl and the good and evil that it brings.
The pearl has brought many good and evil things to Kino and his family here is a list of the good and evil that it has brought.
Good
-Coyotito was able to be helped by the Doctor seeing as they now have payment.
-Kino has money to send his child to school and afford to have a better life for his son and the rest of his family.
Bad
-The pearl has tempted people like the Doctor to think about stealing it.
-Evil spirits and songs have been constantly in the head of Kino since finding the pearl.
-Kino is now forced to travel the dangerous route to the Capital to try and get a fair trade for his pearl and not be cheated by the tradesmen.
These are all reasons why the pearl is so important to the story and why i decided to choose this image of a pearl as my symbol to represent the story so far.
Questions Never Asked- Sabrina El-Abry
1. If Kino hadn't found the pearl by the end of chapter 2, what other options would he have to save Coyotito(his son)?
If Kino really wanted to save his son, he might've sold the canoe to pay the doctor. After that, they might not have any money for food because of how poor they'd become.
2. How do you think the pearl will affect them from this point?
Since they've been poor for a long time, they might not know how to react to the drastic change. My guess is they'll be learning a lot from their mistakes in the next few chapters.
3. What kinds of obstacles did Kino and his family have to face in poverty? What obstacles would they face if they were wealthy?
Kino and his family might've been worried about what they were going to have for dinner in the evening. Now they might have to control what they spend on.
4. Do you think the story would appeal to a wider range of people if the author had mentioned how Kino and Juana had originally met?
Yes I definitely think that the story would appeal to a wider range of people because there is a large amount of people that like romance. It might not be a lot more people but it's still more people.
5. How would Coyotito react to his scorpion sting if he was older?
Coyotito would probably run away from it instead of play with it. He would've had a much higher chance of not getting stung.

Mood Swings -Cielo Bautista
1. "But Juana's eyes were on him and she could not wait"
- This part of the story creates suspense in how Juana’s feeling because her and Kino want to see the pearl so they can get help from the doctor because of Coyotito . The atmosphere in this part is anxious and nerve wrecking for the characters and the readers.
2. "This doctor was of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kino's race"
- This passage uses decent language to express how the doctor's being racist towards Kino's race. It shows that Kino’s race has been treated poorly and unequal in their place. Because of the situation it makes the character feel angry and mad.
3."They knew his ignorance, his cruelty, his his avarice, his appetites, his sins."
- The section shows what Kino's impression of the doctor from past experiences. He doesn't seem to like him very much according to the passage. The author uses description of the doctor to show how he isn't a good guy in their town.
4. "Then without warning, he struck the gate a crushing blow with his fist."
- The author uses description of action to show that the character is angry because of what happened earlier. It is a surprising event because Kino doesn't seem to come out as a violent character in the book. The writer wants to put some tension between the characters.
5. "And bow a wave of shame went over the whole procession. They melted away"
- The author uses metaphor to describe the atmosphere of the passage which is upset or sad because of how the doctors treated them. The writer wants the readers to feel bad for the characters because of what happened to him. The author wants to have different moods in each passage in order to keep the book interesting.

Isaiah Heidt 9-2 Quote Blog
1.) "Under her breath Juana repeated an ancient magic to guard against such evil, and on top muttered a Hail Mary between clenched teeth" Pg. 5
In this quote Juana is reciting magic and prayers to try and help save and protect her baby which was just stung by a scorpion. This quote shows how she believes in religion and is very spirited. It also shows how much she loves and cares for her baby.
2.) "Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians?" Pg.11
Said by the town doctor who is refusing to heal a baby because the parents have no money. This quote shows how the doctor is not a nice person and is greedy. It also shows how poor the main characters are and how rich some of the people they live near are.
3.) "Kino lifted the flesh, and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as the moon" Pg.19
This quote shows how Kino makes a living and lets us know that the pearl he found was very special and rare. It also has smilies to help visualize what the author is trying to let us know and is very descriptive in the way he finds and removes the pearl from the shell.
4.) "This doctor was of a race which for nearly four hundred years had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kinos race" Pg.9
The author tells us with this quote that Kinos family and relatives had been poorly treated by richer peoples. This also lets us know how the relationship between some of the rich in the town and some of the poor in the town is.
5.) "Until at last came to view eight small misshapen seed pearls, as ugly as ulcers, flattened and almost valueless" Pg.11
I can tell from this quote that Kino and his family are very poor and do not have a lot of money. It also shows how rich the doctor is compared to the rest of the town in how he won't even take Kinos life savings as payment to heal an insect bite because its not enough money.
